An Easy Way To Create Products And Other Stuff

I’m working on a couple of new niche sites, as well as – now – a couple of online courses.

Most people have skills that they’re good at. They could easily just write down what they do, how they do it and have the basics for a very good product.

I’m no different. I create niche sites and have a pretty good track record. I also know about SEO, writing and the other things we talk about on this little project.

The problem is that externalising what you do correctly is tough. I’ve sat and tried making notes before, but it really takes you out of the moment.

For example, when I’m searching around for niche site things, I don’t really think about what I’m doing. It’s all very holistic. One minute I’ll think, “I wonder if there are a lot of sites about X?” and I’ll click on a link or two, then I’ll think about affiliate programs and then I start to wonder about content.

Nowadays, that process isn’t very organised at all. Most people think, “Could I write a niche site about fitness?” and then they look for a fitness niche – we’ll say “lose weight if you’ve only got one leg from diabetes” and then they’ll put in stuff like “fitness program affiliate links” and do competition searches for “diabetes workouts with one leg.”

Unsurprisingly, they’ll get very few results and very few good affiliate programs. That’s why I use a very different approach. But this isn’t an article about niche sites.

It’s about being able to say, “Alright, this is what I do” and being able to do that without having it take away from what you’re doing. (So no note-taking.)

Enter the new idea.

Record Yourself

This isn’t a “record yourself doing a site build and release that as a product.”

That said, I did get the idea from Kyle’s Pro Niche Site where he does a run through of creating a niche site from start to finish.

This is the same idea, but for internal consumption only.

Here’s how it works:

  • Get a Dictaphone, screen recorder and/or video camera
  • Record yourself as you go about your business
  • Play it back so you can trace back what you did and when

You don’t have to use all of the above tools and you can just use one. It depends on what you’re teaching people.

The general concept though is to record yourself as you’re doing it. I use a camera and just explain into it what I’m doing. It’s a little effort but it’s hands-free. So I might say:

“I’m just doing a search for mattress affiliate programs because I can write an article, “How to get better sleep” for the niche site [about quitting smoking or whatever.]”

Then I carry on with what I’m doing and keep recording as I’m doing it. At the end, I play it back and have the outline of a method for a product or training routine or template.

Play It Back

I use an app called Smart Voice Recorder on my tablet. This means that when recording, the silence is skipped so I don’t have to wade through hours of empty material where I’m not saying anything.

Even without that, put your recording on high speed, go through it and take notes on your approach and you’ll have a skeleton of a product or method.

You can use this to create an info product or create training for your freelancers or customers.

If you really wanted to, then you could go back through and use the material from the original recording to create a script and then do the whole thing again in a coherent manner.

Final Thoughts

This is a pretty short article because the technique is easy and straightforward.

Essentially, we’re talking about recording yourself doing an activity so that you don’t consciously have to record your method or thoughts as you do it. Well, aside from talking into the camera or Dictaphone (unless you’re typing/using a screen recorder, then you don’t have to do that.)

Anyway, give it a try and let me know how you get on. Even better, make the method better and drop a comment on how to improve it!
