(Note: This article was originally published to JamieMcSloy.co.uk on March 20th, 2020. I’m going through an old backup of the site, which has hundreds of posts that aren’t currently uploaded. As I’m working hard on updating the site, letting these old posts be the daily posts for a while.)
I messed my eyes up typing yesterday, so this is just the latest in a string of daily blog posts that’s shorter than it should be.
We’ve been talking about a site restructuring that’s been put on hold whilst I concentrate on getting the latest Direct Response Newsletter out. That’ll be sent out on Monday, assuming there isn’t another press conference announcing paper documents have been banned from travel.
Site restructuring is going well. Site design is OK, though I’m a bit anxious about recreating the design using Thrive Theme Builder. Still, who dares wins.
An issue that you might find with structuring a site – especially if you’re creating a personal odyssey site like this one has become – is that nothing fits neatly.
So the biggest topic by far on this site is how to make money online. That one’s straightforward.
The rest though is less straightforward. Does writing have its own section distinct from making money online? Where does the psychological experiment stuff fit?
The more you have your own unique proposition, (in terms of the subjects you cover and the identity you display,) the harder it becomes to connect those dots. Ultimately, you are trying to fashion a whole new thing.
That’s all the upfront cost of being, or becoming, yourself.
The other day, I wrote an article called, “How To Build Your Own Red Book.”
Like the Mouse Utopia Experiments, that was an article that I thought was one of my weird ones that wouldn’t connect.
And, like the Mouse Utopia Experiments, I was wrong; I’ve received a lot of interest on the Red Book article in terms of views, feedback and messages about it.
This is, to my mind, an indicator that I’m stepping in the right direction. The problem, you’ll find, is when you step in the right direction, you’re stepping into unknown territory.
And it all comes back to the Hero’s Journey and the fact that if you want to achieve things that are less-than-normal faire, you’re going to have to go where nobody else goes and bring back the gold.
Now, in all honesty you should probably be asking yourself, “Jamie, how does that even fit into a blog that’s about making money online?”
And the answer to that question is exactly the issue I’m having with the site redesign at the moment.
