Another short post today due to headache issues. This, ironically, brings me to the topic of the day.
I’m heavily into systems thinking. Most aspects of my life involve it in some way.
Now, there’s a weakness to systems thinking; that is, we’re not machines and the world is inherently chaotic. The best laid plans go to waste and the most powerful systems in the world can be brought down by one thing. And, I’m not even talking about Taleb’s Black Swan concept here; sure, a meteorite could hit the Earth tomorrow and we’re mammalian dinosaurs, or a solar flare sens us right back to the paleolithic.
I’m talking about the simple things. Like you get a headache and you can’t shift it and it throws your week out. Or, you get home and find there’s a leak in your bathroom that’s headed right for the mains electric downstairs. Or both on the same day, like today.
Here are two things you can do:
- Practice laughing (or otherwise remaining calm) at these things, and not taking them so seriously – especially when they are serious. Stress is a major killer nowadays, and while stressful situations are sometimes unavoidable, you lessen their impact by reacting well to them.
- When you’ve got a problem that consistently causes you issues, (that’ll be the headaches then) fix them. They probably aren’t going to fix themselves.
And with this morsel of gnomic wisdom written, I’m off to see what I can do about this leak. Then this headache.
you gotta have this carefully constructed baseline of calmness to fall back into, like a sea shore, so when the waves come striking on you, pulling you up and down, from screams to cries to mumbles… you can laugh at it thinking “crazy little me, huh? making a big deal of stuff for 5 minutes/hours straight… before remembering its all gonna be alright.”
