One Idea, Multiple Sites
Do you have trouble coming up with niche website ideas?
Coming up with a niche website idea and then building a niche website should only really be a part time thing. If you’re going to make $200 a month from a website, it can’t be your main source of income. Most niche websites have a ceiling in terms of their earning potential, and so the last thing you want to do is spend six months researching for one.
Luckily, you don’t have to.
Niche websites are simple things. You pick a niche market with a problem, you find a product that solves that problem, you write an article about solving the problem with said product, and you give your reader an opportunity to buy the product.
That’s all there is to it.
Really, the hardest part of getting a niche site together is thinking about the idea; what problems need solving?
Wouldn’t it be great if every time you had an idea, you could turn that into multiple sites?
One Niche Site Idea, Multiple Websites
I’ve already gone through how to determine what a good idea for a niche site is.
In fact, in my archives I’ve touched on nearly every topic that you could think of for a niche site. Some articles include:
That said we can always go into more detail. Here’s an idea for more idea generation than you can think of.
Take One Idea…
On Twitter yesterday, I wrote about how you can take one idea and use it multiple times. I used the example of shin guards for MMA.
Now, I don’t run a shin guard website. Maybe it’s a great niche, maybe it isn’t. But it’s a good example of what I’m talking about.
You’d use a shin guard for MMA to protect your legs when you’re kicking and getting kicked. Let’s say you find an affiliate link for some $100 shin guards. You make $10 per sale, and so you decide to start mma-shin-guards.com. If you’ve done your research, then that’s perfectly fine and it’ll probably make you some money.
There’s a lot more that you can do with that idea though.
… Make Multiple Sites With It
People who do MMA need shin guards, and that’s why you can buy and sell MMA Shin Guards. That’s the obvious answer.
You can take the idea in another direction though: What else do MMA fighters need to protect?
- Their Heads?
- Their Hands?
- Their Genitals?
- Their Skin?
- Their Eyes?
You get the idea. Now, if you have a successful website about defending your shins with the shin guards, then understand that you lose nothing by either adding to your site or creating new ones for these topics. After all, you know that there’s a buying audience, and all you have to do is repeat what you’ve already done.
But There’s More
MMA people aren’t the only people who need to wear shin guards. Even if they are, the base need of a shin guard is to protect your legs from something. So think of all the different people who might need to protect their legs from something:
- Motorcyclists
- Other Sportspeople
- Mountaineers
- People who work in industrial places
- Police/firefighters/etc.
- Bouncers
- Pro-Wrestlers (Shout out to ThisDadDoes on Twitter who gave me this idea last night)
You get the point. Again, we have proof of concept here, and we’re pretty sure that these are going to be buying audiences because they have the same need: Protection.
Now, bear in mind at this point that a firefighter probably isn’t going to buy an MMA shin guard before storming a burning building. That doesn’t matter – you’ll find another product if you have to.
The point is, you’ve already done the thinking and come up with a need and multiple markets. This is much more efficient than thinking of a hundred different unrelated things like juicers, then leather jackets, then budget laptops.
If you’re going to burn calories using your brain, you might as well make them go as far as possible.
One Final Thing
This doesn’t have to be solely about function.
My friend recently went to Japan. When he got back, he told me that there were girls getting braces to make their teeth deliberately messed up for fashion’s sake.
He told me that people were walking around with cassette players and other things out of the ark for fashion’s sake.
A couple of years ago, people were buying designer glasses and taking the lenses out just so they could be stylish even if they didn’t need glasses.
The fact is, people have stupid reasons for buying stuff, and that doesn’t matter. If you can sell glasses on your niche site to people who don’t need them, then great!
If you could turn MMA shin guards into a fashion statement and sell them to fifteen-year old girls, then do that!
Again, it’s another use out of the same idea. It won’t work for everything, but then there’s no harm in trying.
Think for instance about all the old, useless stuff people buy as ornaments or garden furniture.
Final Thoughts
Having great ideas is one of the hardest parts of business. That’s why when you have a great idea, it’s best to really put it to the test and stretch it, making as much out of it as possible.
Niche website ideas aren’t all that complicated. That said, you still have to put effort into picking the right niche. Once you’ve found a winning niche, it’s easier and better to stretch that niche out as far as possible as opposed to trying to come up with entirely separate ideas instead.
